There are few things more exciting than receiving a call that something you’ve written is a contest finalist. I got that call last week from PNWA.
Purrfect Revenge is a finalist in the Pacific Northwest Writer’s Association 2019 Literary Contest in the Short Story Category. I have had high scores in NYC Midnight Contest heats before, but I have only made it to the finals of a contest one time before, so this is wonderful news.
I first wrote Purrfect Revenge for the NYC Midnight Short Story Contest. I needed a comedy piece that featured a copycat character and fundraising as the subject.
I set Purrfect Revenge in Las Vegas. The protagonist is a woman who designs purses to raise funds for a charity. I had two copycat characters – someone who copies her bags and an Elvis Impersonator. My protagonist has to find a way to get her revenge on the copycat. And because I love cats, I decided I needed not just a copycat, but real cats as well. The protagonist’s charity is a cat shelter. Hilarity and revenge ensue.
Results of the contest will be revealed at the PNWA 2019 Conference, but no matter what happens, this is an honor and I am so grateful.
