I am part of a great writers’ group that meets weekly to critique members’ work and to support one another in our writing journey. We recently started a podcast to discuss writing craft. Our third episode is now live on YouTube.
Our question this week: “What do you put on Page One?”
One of my colleagues tells us that you need a hook on page one. How do you get a great hook though? I think it is by adding tension. The presence of tension gets your reader to ask the all-important question, “What comes next?” We offer tips.
In the podcast I also talk about what NOT to put on the first page.
You do not want to disappoint your agent/editor or your reader on page one. If your novel lets them down and does not fulfill the promise of your synopsis or your cover blurb, it will be fatal.
So what do you NOT want on page one to avoid fatal let down? Watch the podcast to find out my suggestions!
My partners on the podcast include (in alphabetical order):
- Avis Adams, an amazing published poet and YA writer whose novel is under consideration by an editor
- Carl Lee, a writer of paranormal fantasy – his first novel has also generated interest from an editor
- Melanie MacDonald, a mystery writer editing her first novel
- Wendy Kendall, the author of a published cozy mystery
