This post kicks of my series of best cat book gifts for the holidays. I am reviewing one book each day until Christmas, in no particular order.
Each choice is special in its own way. All would make great gifts for your cat addicted book lovers. Or your book addicted cat lovers. I will focus on books that are quick reads with plenty of photos, because that format makes a great stocking stuffer or add on gift.
Why cat books? Several reasons, really. I adore cats. Cats appear in most of my fiction. And I enjoy promoting cat books for the holidays, because I frequently give or get them as gifts myself. And finally, so many people have a cat, that cat themed gifts are an industry. You can’t go wrong.
“i am maru,” is my first pick for this series. It makes sense to start with the most watched individual animal on the internet. Seriously. Maru is a Japanese Scottish Fold YouTube sensation. His videos have been viewed over 400 million times. He has a Guinness World Record. Chances are, if you are a cat lover, you have seen and enjoyed them.
At 95 pages, it is light on text and long on adorable photos of Maru agreeably cramming himself into the trash can, under the sofa, inside paper bags, and the iconic soda box. In fact, mugumogu gives us a behind the scenes look at the soda box video. Most cats like boxes, but few will squeeze themselves quite so tightly into the variety of containers that Maru will.
The book also gives insight into Maru’s personality, likes, and typical day. It’s a quick read, but an entertaining one. Your lucky recipient will stop opening gifts on Christmas morning to read it right then.
The book came out in 2011, and it is more readily available in the United States than it used to be. It’s a collectible for Maru lovers, especially since it’s the only Maru book in English. On the other hand, if your cat loving friend isn’t familiar with Maru yet, they will thank you profusely for the introduction later, once they get to know him.
Be sure to pick this one up in time for Christmas. And then go binge watch some Maru videos. You’ll probably go back and add a second copy to your cart.
